August is not the month for literary awards, but one of the year’s most exciting festivals is coming up, the Edinburgh International Book Festival. With names such as Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie, Neil Gaiman and Kate Atkinson on the programme it promises to be a good event.

There are also plenty of exciting books being published. My absolute favourite is Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam which will be published in Canada on 27 August and UK on 29 August. The publication date in the US is 3 September. The book concludes the trilogy started with Oryx and Crake. In addition there are many promising debuts this month, from Yangsze Choo’s Malaysian ghost story and Samantha Shannon’s YA novel to Janice Clark’s gothic adventure, plus many more.
