In terms of awards and festivals the year starts slowly, with only a handful of awards and 4 events in the fair and festival category. For avid readers of British and Irish fiction the two dates of the Costa Book Awards should be of interest.

On the publishing front 2014 comes to a promising start with novels from Sue Monk Kidd, Helen Dunmore, Armistead Maupin and Chang rae-Lee. It is Chang rae-Lee’s forthcoming novel that intrigues me the most; a venture into dystopian fiction by such a graceful writer should be interesting. In addition to these and many other novels by well-known writers, there are also plenty of promising debuts. Among others Ishmael Beah, whose memoir about his time as a child soldier became a bestseller, is publishing his first novel about the aftermath of the war in Sierra Leone.
