The year begins relatively slowly in terms of awards and events, but the Costa Book Awards announce both their category winners and the overall winner this month, and there is a small number festivals and fairs, among them the Jaipur Literary Festival.

In terms of publishing there are some interesting books coming out, although no really big names this early in the year. Among the most intriguing books are some debuts, such as Etta and Otto and Russell and James by Emma Hooper and The First Bad Man by Miranda July. Another exciting debut is Paula Hawkins’ thriller The Girl On the Train, which, not surprisingly, is being hailed as the next Gone Girl. There are also some other interesting thrillers being published in January, from Rebecca Scherm’s art heist story Unbecoming to Decsent, Tim Johnston’s a lyrical thriller set in the Rockies.

A wish you all a New Year full of reading!
