There are plenty of literary awards handed out in May, among them the Arthur C. Clark Awards, the Man Booker International Prize and the Independent Foreign Fiction prize.

In the long and wonderful list of festivals the Hay Festival is one of the most anticipated ones on my side of the Atlantic while book lovers in the US can look forward to the Book Expo America and Book Con.

Among the books being published this month, the most eagerly anticipated ones might be A God in Ruins, the companion book to Kate Atkinson’s Costa Book Award winning Life After Life, and Anne Enright’s latest novel: The Green Road. This month also sees the publication of the first volume in Mark Z. Danielewski’s new magnum opus, The Familiar. The first installment, On a Rainy Day in May, is 880 pages long and 26 more volumes are expected, so this one is only for readers willing to make a serious commitment.
