January begins with the announcement of the Costa Book Awards category winners and towards the end of the month we find out who is the overall winner. There are a few other interesting prize announcements to look forward to as well.

As usual the festival calendar is short this early in the year but who would not mind flying over to Palm Beach for some poetry in the sun?

January sees the publication of a cold war thriller by Orange Prize winner Helen Dunmore, a fictional account of the life of the composer Dmitri Shostakovich by Booker Prize winner Julian Barnes, and a story of a mother-daughter relationship by Pulitzer prize winner Elizabeth Strout. So, hopefully some good books of prize winning quality to wait for. But it is not only former prize winners producing exciting reads. Among the many first time novelists publishing this month are Abby Geni (The Lightkeeper), Taylor Brown (Fallen Land), and Sunil Yapa (Your Heart Is a Muscle the Size of a Fist).

Happy New Year everyone!
